Grandma’s version of “Sloppy Joes” is one of the recipes we all remember differently, some in the family have created their own versions of it, and none of us could remember exactly how Grandma made hers. My mother made it frequently, but the recipe was in her head and never written down. Luckily, Grandma did have her recipe on an index card that has survived the 50+ years since she typed it up. The card lasted longer than the typewriter.
Grandma titled the recipe “Barbecues” but always told us we were having Sloppy Joes for dinner.
Sloppy Joes (Barbecues)
1 lb hamburger
1 onion brown and salt and pepper.
1 can chicken gumbo soup
1 can spaghetti sauce
1t mustard (prepared not dry)
1T catsup
shake of worchestshire sauceserve over hamburger buns.
We all remember that the soup she used was Campbell’s, nobody recalls which spaghetti sauce came in a can in the 60’s though.
I remember making this when I was much younger. I asked my mom if she stole this from grandma! She did.
